Tata probing latest Nano fires
The Nano, which has been garnering negative publicity with regards to fires will be investigated by Tata. The latest case involved a Mumbai insurance agent who picked up the car from Concorde Motors, Prabhadevi. Within 45 minutes, the car caught fire and was destroyed completely. Since an alert biker managed to notify the passenger and the driver on time, nobody was injured in the fire.
The media took a keen interest in the episode and we've been seeing so much negative publicity about the Tata Nano lately. This is after 3 other cases in Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Delhi where the cars were parked and caught fire without any external agent. Tata's spokesperson told the media that "This is a unique case. We are trying to figure out what went wrong". The first few fires were a result of faulty switches from one of Tata's OEM manufacturer which caused a short in the steering column and put the car in flames. The spokesperson believes that the latest case was not related to the earlier incidents in any way.
It is believed that Tata might do a recall of their cars once the cause for the latest fire is found out. At a time when so many other manufacturers are busy with car recalls, certain high-placed sources believe that this may be the most logical way forward: "With the spate of recalls happening, the company may just think this is the best way forward to keep customer confidence intact."
